Project set to Benefit from Exciting New Event

June 12, 2014 June 2014 No Comments

GW20140429-21296The Martinborough Community Centre project is proud to be the official charity for a new adventure race set in the heart of one of New Zealand’s best loved private multi-day walks, the Tora Coastal Walk.

The Tora Coastal Challenge will be held on Saturday, 6th September 2014 and feature a 6km or 18km run/walk or a 32km run. The Challenge is open to individuals or teams of three and will see participants cover the scenic route walked by hundreds of visitors every year.

“The Tora Coastal Challenge follows a stunning trail over private hill country and coastal farms, through river valleys and native bush and of course along the dramatic Tora coastline,” says Kiri Elworthy, one of the owners of the Tora Coastal Walk which will celebrate 20 years in business this October.

“It is the first time we have opened up the walk like this to the public so it’s a wonderful opportunity for people to come and see a unique part of New Zealand and challenge themselves at the same time and we are so pleased to be able to support the Martinborough Community Centre with all profits from the race going towards the project.”

Kiri says all ages and abilities are catered for. All participants start at the brand new Stony Bay Lodge on the Tora Coast, which is a 45 minute drive from the wine village of Martinborough.

“Not only is there a family-friendly 6km leg that follows the coastline, but the three-person team event is perfect for corporates wanting an office challenge or a group of friends wanting to tackle something new,” she says.

Entries are limited to 100 teams and 400 individuals, so register early to avoid disappointment. Delicious food and great rural hospitality will be available from the Tora locals, and all entrants of the 18km and 32km course will receive a complimentary copy of the Tora Coastal Walk cookbook (RRP $20) for their participation.

Supporter Profile: Martinborough Community Board
The Martinborough Community Board represents and acts as an advocate for Martinborough Ward residents. We had a chat with Lisa Cornelissen, Chair of the Board, about their support for the new Community Centre.

Why have you decided to give to the Town Hall project?
We want to help to create a legacy for Martinborough people that lasts well beyond the time each of us can be individual Community Board members. Our experience of supporting the Health Centre tells us this town has the co-operative spirit and ‘can do’ attitude to make this happen. We want to continue to build a lively and attractive community centre around our historic Square that all of us who love living in Martinborough will use and enjoy, as well as attracting visitors to the Wairarapa from further afield. As the recent MADCAPS musical festival shows, we also have lots of talent to showcase in a great venue like the Town Hall!

What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Regret the things you did, not the things you didn’t do.

What’s one thing that most people don’t know about you?
I once broke my foot falling off a rather impressive pair of shoes.

Thank you to our generous supporters
