Skyline Challenge Mountain Bike Ride Returns to Martinborough

It will have been 7 years, but we’re back – bigger, brighter and better than ever with a Mountain Bike Ride in Martinborough,” says Martinborough Lions President Graeme Thomson.  “Lots of people have told us they want a mountain bike ride in Martinborough and miss the earlier version, so we are responding to an obvious need.”

The Challenge is set down for ANZAC weekend, on Saturday 26 April 2014.  “We are in the process of organising on-line entries, sponsors and finalising course details,” says Graeme.

Organisers from Martinborough Lions have been working with local and Wellington expert mountain bike riders. “The 2014 version will make the most of the hilly terrain for the expert riders, provide a challenge for Sunday riders and have an easier course for novices,” says Graeme.  “We are even going to have a route for walkers so that they too can enjoy the environment and views of autumn in the vines.”  There will be 3 courses, one of 8 km (including walkers), one of 16 km and a Grade 3, 30 km plus ride.

The Skyline Challenge mountain bike ride was last held in 2007, when there were about 130 entries.  The ride passes through the 3 historic sheep stations of Huangarua, Puruatanga and Oystershell.  The views from the top look down over Martinborough and the surrounding vineyards, the South Wairarapa plains and the Kaikoura Ranges.

“The Lions are right behind this venture 100%.  We think it is a great opportunity to provide a mountain bike challenge for the lower north island, raise some funds for the local community and for lots of people to have a great time in the magnificent Martinborough outdoors,” says Graeme.  All proceeds from the event will be going to the Wharekaka Home for the Elderly Transport Vehicle Appeal.

The Lions are keen for locals to have a go too.  “We know there are lots of mountain bike riders within the Martinborough and wider Wairarapa community who might like to ride the skyline and see views usually reserved for sheep,” says Graeme. “Martinborough is a go-ahead place, with lots of events and activities, and this will return a super event to the calendar.”
