25TH ANNIVERSARY LUNCHEON

Our Club had great pleasure in celebrating reaching 25 years with an excellent lunch held at the South Wairarapa Working Men’s Club – congratulations to the chef!
We began with a glass of excellent mulled wine which warmed the hands and the heart and encouraged people to mix and mingle. Peter Totman contributed to the friendly relaxed atmosphere with some background piano music which was much appreciated.

We were joined by Russell Tether, Probus NZ Inc Regional Member and his wife Wendy. The new national organisation is working well and it was good to be able to share the highlights of our first 25 years with Russell and Wendy. Jean Archer headed the group who put together an excellent booklet entitled “South Wairarapa Probus Club – Twenty Five Years 1990-2015”. Together with historical information about the Club and its progress over the years, it also includes records of past speakers and short anecdotes by various office holders and their experience of Probus. The highlights are several photos of various trips made by Probus groups including Tararua walking trips, a visit to Somes Island and another to Kapiti Island. Lovely to see many familiar faces in the photos.

Barbara Lovatt approached the microphone in her usual dignified and intelligent manner – and then metamorphosed into an absolute copy of dear old “Aunt Daisy” who we all remembered doing her broadcasts to our mothers when we were children. Barbara definitely deserved an Oscar – she was the real thing!

We then exercised our brains on a quiz which did the job of deflating any artificially inflated egos as we were reminded that although we thought we knew most things there were definitely some gaps there – though the average scores reflected that we were after all a reasonably intelligent bunch.

After cutting the beautiful cake provided we then made presentations to all founding members of the Club who are still current members. Congratulations to all these people for their attendance and great contribution to the Club over the years.
Anyone who would like more information on our Probus Club and our various interest groups are very welcome to contact Margaret Griffiths on 306-8102.
