Tourism Thrives as Domestic Visitors Spend Skyrockets

Martinborough businesses are reporting an upswing in visitor traffic. Notably, Australian visitors have joined the mix. Domestic visitor spending for July 2023 reached $12.5 million, marking the largest increase compared to the same period last year within the nationwide network of Regional Tourism Organizations. This trend indicates Wairarapa’s status as an emerging winter destination, with the Greytown Winter Festival emerging as a prominent drawcard.

Martinborough Business Association Attends Business Wairarapa Summit

In August, members of the Martinborough Business Association were among attendees at the annual Summit Conference hosted by Business Wairarapa (Chamber of Commerce). Held at the Events Centre in Carterton, the conference received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants. The event featured respected keynote and guest speakers, extensive networking opportunities, and fantastic hospitality.

Among the testimonials from attendees:

“For a small region, we sure know how to put on a business summit. I was already looking forward to hearing from Karen Walker and Brad Olsen, and they didn’t disappoint. But it was Bronwyn Lord’s story of her journey from pregnant teen mum to McDonald’s Franchise owner and running her own training company which was the most inspiring (and funny). A really worthwhile day out of the office. Looking forward to next year.”

“It was my second business summit, and I didn’t think last year could be topped! The calibre of speakers was exceptional. They were informative, motivational, and from a diverse range of fields, making for an engaging day. Very important to note the incredible range of delicious food that just kept coming and coming. Outstanding.”

Wow, I loved it. Great speakers, very informative. I really enjoyed it, and what great hosts, apart from the cold, I think we were all well looked after.”

Anticipation is already building for the 2024 edition of this event, which promises to be a pivotal engagement on the annual calendar for the Wairarapa business community.

WaiHost: A New Beacon of Training Excellence

Curious about WaiHost? You’re not alone. Many in the region may remember Kiwi Host, a renowned training provider in the past. Business Wairarapa has forged a partnership with the new owners of KiwiHost and has introduced the WaiHost program, tailored specifically for our region. The third course under this program is about to commence, with all courses in high demand and oversubscribed. The overwhelming popularity of WaiHost is a testament to the region’s thirst for quality training. There are plans to run a course in Martinborough in the near future.

Help for Life Flight

In a bid to enhance the community’s well-being and safety our association, in collaboration with Business Wairarapa, is actively engaged with Life Flight. The objective is to explore opportunities for contributing to the fundraising effort required to support the acquisition of Life Flight’s new fixed-wing aircraft upgrade. Life Flight plays a pivotal role in our region, with 25% of their flights originating from Wairarapa. Thus, their presence is indispensable as a vital air ambulance service for our community.

As we welcome the blossoms of spring and the promise of new beginnings, it is evident that Wairarapa notwithstanding tough economic times for all, is brimming with energy. With tourism on the rise, an enriching training program, and a commitment to community well-being, our region and town is poised for a brighter future. Stay tuned as we embark on this exciting journey together.
