Surprise! Even golfers hate the wet

September 12, 2023 September 2023, Sports No Comments

Martinborough’s golf course has seen some extreme weather in its long history but possibly not as much as this winter. It has been wet, wet, wet. It started to improve to just very wet and we got to just sticky and wet. Then the sun shone ever so briefly. Now we are back to very wet!

And are we over it! Not surprisingly, many members have taken the opportunity to head to warmer climes!!

The first two weeks of August saw very few opportunities to play competitions and so the matches have started to back up. Wednesday ladies, 9 holers and Thursday Club were basically rained off both weeks. However, there were a few hardy souls that were determined to get out there and play so the course has usually had someone trudging around.

Some competitions have managed play. Weekend comps have seen varying numbers but some of the recent winners have been John Warner, Vern Anton, Brian Russo, Jason Shaw, Shane Hislop, Doug Clark, Rob Coy, Jason Burt, Josh Hawkins, Dayle Harwood, Malcolm Bridge, Brett Abercrombie, Robbie Walters, Trevor Petersen, Colin Whibley-Smith, Steven Croft and Ant North.

The greens must still be okay as putting scores have been as low as 24 (Jason Shaw) and 25 (Doug Clark). Ant North also managed to take home the Bird’s Nest (that’s two two’s in his round!).

Every other week, Tuesdays have seen the better weather – the Grumpies have managed to get around 15+ players on those “good” days. Those lucky enough to be in the winning circle include Bob Schofield, Andy Morison, Malcolm Bridge, Seamus O’Sullivan, Greg Dalton and Brett Abercrombie. During August, these guys have managed just two two’s between them – maybe the end of the month will see a few more?

The 9 hole comps have been low in numbers too, again due to rain and travel. Recent winners in their comps have been Debbie Coom, Jill Murphy and Tania Williamson.

The 18 hole lady golfers have not had a great run (no pun intended!). But when they at last managed to get a contingent together, it was basically a Sandra Petersen feast! Taking out all categories of comp (as playing as many comps each outing as possible to get back with the programme), Sandra was in fine form. That carried over to last week’s Thursday club as well.

The boys didn’t get much of a look in. Although Edward Brown, Lisa-Marie Ireland and Andy Morison all played better than their handicaps, many more had 36 stablefords or there about.

Wellington Golf has advised some great news from WGI – our Martinborough Ladies team of Sandra Petersen, Kelly Taylor, Julie Weber and Sherry Weatherstone recently-ish competed in the National Teams Championship representing the Wellington District. They came 3rd from 14 teams so well done gals!!

Building consent has been granted for the clubhouse project! Now the wait is on for ground conditions to improve so the site can be fenced and cleared to commence the new build.

Currently enjoying catching up with family and friends in the UK is Mrs Kris Mason (ie Kris in the office)!! While Kris is enjoying better weather, Christina Cater is covering the office on Kris’s usual Mon-Wed (plus also her alternate weekends). Jude Hudson is on the other weekends and Carol Parkinson is still in the office Thursdays and Fridays. So ring the office to book a round or go online to book through Golf NZ.

Happy golfing, and bring on the wind to dry that course – please!
