The budget for building the present Town Hall, in 1912, was some 3,500 pounds. With only 700 people in the area and an average income of 3 pounds a week this was a huge achievement.

To attract the necessary institutional funding for our 21st century project we need to show the same sort of community commitment. So far generous private donors have pledged over $1m but more is still needed.

We are now launching a new round of fundraising for pledges of $5000, $3000 or $1500. To show our appreciation in a tangible way to those who become supporters we will be permanently engraving their names within the grounds of the new centre.

Payment details will be arranged with each individual supporter with the opportunity to make these payments over three years. Any donations will be tax deductible.

Of course we would be thrilled to receive donations of any size, so please think about helping your community preserve and enhance the fine facility left to us by those early settlers

To talk to someone about supporting the project please call Max Stevens 306 9095 or Vicky Read 306 8570 or email info@martinboroughcommunitycentre.co.nz

Supporter Profile: Conor Kershaw

Conor Kershaw describes himself as “the current caretaker” (4th generation) of P&K and Mitre 10 – local businesses that provide significant services, employment and unstinting generosity to local causes. “We firmly believe in supporting the community that supports us”.

The recent changes at P&K are locally focused as well. The store aims to create more value for locals to shop local as well as stocking more locally sourced products to complement the local wines.

Martinborough is now very much home for Conor and his family. “There’s such an interesting, diverse mix of people that make Martinborough special”.

“wai-hing-ah”
We have taken advice from local Iwi and this is the correct pronunciation, with the stress on ‘hing’ pronounced as in ‘ping’ or ‘sing’. Our new name translates as Falling Water.

Thank you to our generous supporters
