Martinborough Artist gets ‘Special Mention’

March 13, 2015 March 2015 Comments Off on Martinborough Artist gets ‘Special Mention’

Martinborough-artis-gets-special-mentionMartinborough artist, Jane Kellahan has been given a special mention in her category at the London Art Biennale, it was announced at the closing ceremony in London recently.

The multi-award winning Wairarapa artist, Jane Kellahan, was commended in the Works on Paper category.

Exhibition organiser Jonathan Moore said that the painting was well received. “While Jane Kellahan did not win first prize it was felt that her work should still be awarded a special mention due to its very high merit,” he said. “Her work has received a lot of interest and admiration throughout the exhibition therefore this award is doubly appropriate.” The piece was New Zealand’s only entry in the international exhibition at the Chelsea Old Town Hall on the Kings Road. Ms Kellahan is happy with the result.“I am pleased. I had a good feeling about the competition,” she said. … Continue Reading

Community Board Update

March 13, 2015 March 2015, Regular Features Comments Off on Community Board Update

Community-Board-notesWell, we are definitely fully back into the swing of things following the Christmas and January break. SWDC is working hard on the Long Term Plan and Martinborough Community Board will be meeting in March to consider our input. Areas we are looking at include footpaths, a better solution for recycling containers, Ultra Fast Broadband and, of course, the Waihinga Centre development.

Whilst we would encourage people to make their own submissions, please drop me an e-mailif you think there’s something that we should consider for the Long Term Plan.

We are currently accepting grant applications, we have a grant pool of over $6,000 for community initiatives that show benefit to the wider Martinborough ward community. You can find out more and download application forms from the SWDC website – the URL is below. Applications must be in by the end of March.

Finally, we’re sad to farewell Adi McMaster from the Martinborough Community Board, but wish her all the best with her MartyGirl natural skincare business. Adi has been a great advocate for youth in Martinborough and has been instrumental in setting up the youth forum, I’m sure we will stay in touch on youth issues.

This means there’s a vacancy on the board with nominations closing midday on the 23rd March. The official stuff is all available at SWDC.govt.nz and if you’d like to find out more myself or any of the board members would be happy to meet for a chat.

On Wednesday 4th March Bob Cooper- Grundy (best Bluesman this side of the Delta!) was joined by Kate Marshall and they shared with us a range of Americana Blues from its origins in the plantation fields, through Gospel and the Country Blues of the Mississippi Delta to the electric Blues of today.

April will see the return of “Jeep Road”, with Kapiti’s phenomenal Blues woman, Clare Christian, on vocals and guitar. She will be joined by her son Gabe Davidson on trumpet and Joe Callwood, who has been performing and teaching in the Wellington music scene for the past 15 years, as well as regularly touring New Zealand and Australia. … Continue Reading
