Sixty years together celebrated

August 7, 2020 August 2020 Comments Off on Sixty years together celebrated

Mate and Elizabeth Higginson were married by the Rev. Breb Stevenson on a clear, frosty thirteenth of August morning sixty years ago. Their reception was held in the Martinborough School Assembly Hall. Followed by spending their honeymoon in the South Island.

Mate and Elizabeth celebrated their special anniversary with children Joy and Tim and their families along with friends at Parehua.  Jane, in Perth, and Andrew, in Papua New Guinea were unable to attend. Mate commented “we were treated most royally”. This including the Maynard twins singing songs such as Blue Smoke which bought back many precious memories.  … Continue Reading

South Wairarapa Tramping Club  –  Local Q E II Bush Covenants

August 7, 2020 August 2020 Comments Off on South Wairarapa Tramping Club  –  Local Q E II Bush Covenants

This trip was intended to be a bike and walk occasion, but due to the rain, only 3 hardy souls chose the biking option!

On Kemptons Line, the landowner told us of the history of this bush area, 1.5ha of mainly 200 year old kahikitea, and wetland. It was fenced to keep stock out in 1973, and 10 years later, after involvement with DOC and the Wellington Regional Council, the area was covenanted under the Q E II scheme. Those organisations plus the Wairarapa Biodiversity Group assist with spraying blackberry, and planting. Despite the wetland drying out in summer, the rare mudfish survive in wet ground beneath the clay surface. … Continue Reading

Under The Martinborough Stars

August 7, 2020 August 2020 Comments Off on Under The Martinborough Stars

When I was 10, my favourite movie was the Clash of The Titans; an extremely cheesy film about Perseus and his pet talking clockwork owl trying to save Princess Andromeda (spoiler alert) from an evil sea dragon.

Watching it now, it is pretty terrible, a cult classic perhaps. The story is based on a Greek classic legend that still can be found amongst the stars. Each character has a constellation named for them, the hero Perseus and Princess Andromeda, Cepheus and Cassiopeia who are the Princess’s parents and even the sea monster Cetus. … Continue Reading

Golf pro-am success _ without clubhouse

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …
