In the plan for Waihenga produced by J D Baird in 1870 section 28 Weld Street was set aside for a Scottish Church, 38 Weld Street for an English Church and 6 Grey Street for a Wesleyan Church . No section for a Catholic Church.
However John Martin’s later plan set aside the section which is now the Martinborough Transport corner for a Presbyterian Church, the section where it is now stands for an Anglican Church and what is now 13 Cologne Street for a Catholic Church. Only the Anglican Church took up the offer.
The Wairarapa Standard of 22 June 1880 carried a notice under the Fencing Act instructing the Catholics to erect a dividing fence. With no Catholics in the area at the time Wairarapa’s only priest, Father Halbwachs saw little point in the section and declined it. … Continue Reading

Library News

Media alert – the WLS now has its own newsletter. Don’t get too excited, it’s only a monthly leaflet. However it does contain all the basic information you need such as opening hours, website, blog and telephone numbers as well as a list of some of the new books to look out for, juicy titbits of news and fascinating bits of useless information.
Much the same as libraries really, where you can get virtually anything you need in the way of information – useless or not. The report concluded that the best option for the Wairarapa is either a combined council or a unitary authority, one that includes the functions of Greater Wellington Regional Council as well.

If these commentators bothered to read the report they would see that it has considered the super-city model and indeed lists the advantages of this arrangement. … Continue Reading

Fire Brigade

June 13, 2012 June 2012, Regular Features Comments Off on Fire Brigade

A very quiet month for the brigade with a couple calls being to back up other brigades. One to a call to assist the Carterton Brigade at a Longbush Road property in case this was needed.
The second to assist the Lake Ferry Fire Party deal with trees on fire – however these were soon all under control and the Brigade was able to turn for home.
A third call was to the Martinborough Hotel where a service man had accidentally activated the fire alarm.
