Once upon a time, an idea took hold in a marvellous community called Martinborough, whose young and old residents are book lovers. Here is the tale of the Martinborough StoryWalk®, a project for the community by the community… 

The Friends of Martinborough Library was a charitable trust established in 2017. The Friends were a group of keen library supporters who raised funds for library projects, primarily for children and families. The last of the fundraising efforts aligned with the library’s move to the Waihinga Centre and plans for creating a magical space for the children who visited. As plans for the Centre took hold, many ideas could not come to fruition. The Friends decided to hold off and wait and see how things progressed as the library settled into its new home. … Continue Reading

The September meeting of the SW Rebus Club heard from Joseph Gillard, Co-Chair of Cobblestones Museum, Greytown, on recent developments and future plans for this fascinating view of early Wairarapa settler memorabilia. Greytown’s history is of particular national interest in that it was the first inland settlement in NZ to become a borough. All preceding boroughs were coastal settlements. A Fifth Friday group visit to Cobblestones, planned for 30 September, was postponed by wet weather to 7 October when Joseph kindly gave a group of members a guided tour of the site. … Continue Reading

John Wade played a part in our first “constitutional crisis”. In early 1840 he chartered the ship “Integrity” to bring a shipload of merchandise over from Tasmania, attracted by news of the New Zealand Company settlement led by William Wakefield. Wade soon fell out with the Integrity’s Captain Pearson and had him arrested and charged by the New Zealand Company’s Settlors’ Council. But Captain Pearson managed to get away, and along with another disgruntled NZ Company colonist sailed north in April 1840 to Russell.  … Continue Reading
