Martinborough Golf Round-Up

September 23, 2019 Regular Features, September 2019, Sports No Comments

9-holers celebrating 21 years – (founding members left to right: Nita Edwards, Dinny Pearce, Jenny Tucker, Denise Sandall, Carole Butler, Ann Parkinson, Sherryl Howie, Maureen Thurlow & Carol Parkinson).

Goodbye winter, see you next year; hello spring, and already the ends of the day are creeping slowly longer – hooray!! The course is looking great and has been playing well, although some challenging days have provided some competitive scores.

Grumpies will kick us off, and big news in August was Terry Blacktop –  Grumpies head honcho and organiser of the Grumps scoring a hole-in-one on number 6, I think it’s his 3rd on our course, plus one in Australia…not a bad tally Terrence!! Other winners have been Alan Eagle, Pete Price and Gary Cuttance.

The 9-holers celebrated a special event in August – 21 years since their first event, the founding members were there and all participants enjoyed a round of golf with cake, followed by dinner then breakfast at the Village Café.  Winners in August have included, Sherryl Howie and Jaquee Read.

Ladies golf winners last month were, Lyle Griffiths…and yes…. Julie Weber…three times; is this woman unstoppable?!

Thursday club has continued to boast large numbers and remains a very popular day, winners have included Rob Lopez and Michael Tosswill.

Mid-month the club held the Bottle-O Lefties/Righties Tournament; Best Gross Andy Morison & Ray Matthews, Best Nett Shane Hartnell & Andy Small, 2nd Nett Bill Ward & Rob Lopez, 3rd Nett Roger Ngahooro & Steve Mawdesley.  Best Nett Women Jenny Boyne & Jenny Lloyd, Best Nett mixed – John & Julie Warner.

September is shaping up to be an exciting month with first round of Club Champs on Saturday 21st September.  Sunday 22nd is the very popular and fun Lamb & Chardonnay Ambrose Tournament and the AB Martin Mixed foursomes (aka divorce tournament) is Sunday 29th September.  Men’s open 54 hole /36 hole Tournament is October 5th and 6th.

Special thanks and best wishes to Sue Berger who after 14 years has resigned her position in the office – good luck Sue and enjoy retirement!!

That’s all from me for now, enjoy the Spring golf; and if you’ve never had a swing at a (stationary, frustrating, willful) little white ball – give it a go, you might discover a whole new world (and a whole new language…), look after you and yours and good golfing everyone!!
