What’s on at Martinborough library

Like you, we’re thrilled with the return of our face-to-face programmes. Pre-school children and their caregivers can enjoy Wā Kōrero storytime every Tuesday at 11 a.m. Each session features an interactive story with music and movement to engage young minds and bodies.

For older children aged 6 to 12, we offer Build with Bricks and STEM clubs for heaps of after school fun. Held on alternate Mondays, they are designed to challenge kids’ spatial and problem-solving skills. To find out more, please visit our website wls.org.nz/whats-on.

 We are also running free workshops to improve your digital skills. Stepping Up is a free community programme for anyone keen to learn how to make the most of their device and use applications with confidence. Please visit your library or call us on 306-9758 to register for an upcoming session.

 Join us on 16 June for Bloomsday to commemorate James Joyce’s life and his genre-bending novel Ulysses. Set in Dublin, the novel follows its protagonist Leopold Bloom over the course of a day, 16 June 1904 (hence, Bloomsday). Come into the library to discover why it caused such a sensation when it was published – and banned – 100 years ago, and why it’s still so polarising today. You can also find out more about the story of Ulysses at this year’s Featherston Booktown Festival – Joycean expert and critic Marco Sonzogni will discuss the novel in detail on Saturday 11 June (visit booktown.nz for ticketing information).

Less controversial but no less brilliant are the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards 2022 finalists. The winners have just been announced – a full list can be found on nzbookawards.nz. We have copies of the shortlisted works so reserve yours today.

From literary stars to real ones, we celebrate Matariki on 24 June. Look out for the Star-Dome, an inflatable planetarium on loan from Te Papa Museum. Come along to learn the importance of Matariki and how to find the Matariki cluster of stars in the dawn sky.
