Martinborough bowls

February 9, 2016 February 2016, Sports Comments Off on Martinborough bowls

The club finalised their first championship of 2016 on anniversary weekend with the playing of the open mens fours.

Hayden Frew, Lester Dee, Peter Ireland and Neville Smith were victorious over David Murray , Blue Hunt, Robert Murray and Tony Lee, 2-0, in the best of three game final.
Scores were tight in both games and fortune could have swung either way in both encounters. However, it was Smith and company who held their composure to hold on in each game for close wins, 12-8 and 12-9.

The club triples will be the next championship decided and results will be displayed in the next issue.

Thursday twilight bowls are back each week from 6pm and any interested people are urged to drop by and check out the format.

The club conducts a cash bar and a sausage sizzle is available for all to partake of.

At the door of the year
When the past meets the future
Let this moment be light
For the roads we will tread;
When the clock seems too fast
Or goes slowly within us,
Let our faith tell the time –
There are good things ahead!

A landmark disappears, the old hose drying tower has been dismantled

A landmark disappears, the old hose drying tower has been dismantled

Since early December there have been 15 callouts which is about the average number for the period. However, the very serious nature of some of these incidents made for a busy summer so far.

Three structure fires resulted in serious damage to buildings but further spread was kept in check by the Brigade and the additional resources brought in from surrounding towns. The Brigade trains with these towns to assure smooth operations in an emergency.

There were four motor vehicle accidents with two being quite serious, tragically resulting in the death of a person pinned under a vehicle. The Brigade was called to fight two serious vegetation fires which were also attended by Rural Brigades in our turnout area.

There were two alarm activations which turned out to be system malfunctions. As one of these was at a large facility and both trucks arriving fully crewed, an impromptu training session was organised, taking advantage of the use of the site for practicing initial attack procedures.

The Martinborough fire station has a new look as the hose drying tower that has stood for over 50 years is being replaced. Hose drying has not been required for many years but the tower was built to last by the then members of the Brigade, many of whom are still around and remember it being erected. The new pole takes less space and provides the height needed for the siren and antennae.
