Martinborough Red Cross Group: Call for volunteers!

March 12, 2020 March 2020 Comments Off on Martinborough Red Cross Group: Call for volunteers!

It’s going to be another busy year for the Martinborough Red Cross Group–starting with the Annual Street Appeal to be held on 20th of March (Friday) followed by the laying of a wreath in the square on Anzac Day, the Cake Day in May and other events later in the year.

With all these upcoming activities, we are on the lookout for more volunteers to join us. If you’re keen, we’d love to hear from you!

If you can spare an hour of your time on 20 March 2020 to support our Annual Street Appeal, we’d really appreciate it. Sign up at www.redcross.org.nz.

The Red Cross is involved in several humanitarian activities here in New Zealand and abroad, and our fundraising efforts aim to support these. Some of the programmes that we support locally are the resettlement of former refugees, provision of winter warmer packs to families in need, and community transport service that help vulnerable individuals get to their medical appointments, among others. For more information about the Martinborough Red Cross Group and the work that we do, contact us through our local coordinators: Mike at 027 939 7373 and Margaret at 027 277 6393.  You can also reach us through e-mail at mrameh192@gmail.com.

The Martinborough Red Cross group will be meeting on the second Wednesday of April, June, August, October and December 2020, around 10:30 am at the Martinborough Fire Station.  You are welcome to join us to learn more how you can help.

Russian Pianist returns to Greytown

March 12, 2020 March 2020 Comments Off on Russian Pianist returns to Greytown

Russian pianist Oleg Marshev will open the Greytown Music Group’s 2020 concert series, with a fascinating programme called “Dialogue: Chopin and Scriabin”. Oleg says “Chopin determined the development of romantic piano music, and had a huge influence on later composers for the piano. I was particularly attracted by the connection with the great Russian composer, Scriabin, who, in his earlier years, was much inspired by Chopin. He used the same forms that were typical of Chopin.”

The programme will consist of Polonaises, Nocturnes, Valses, Mazurkas and Fantasias by both composers. … Continue Reading

The Guest Speaker at our February meeting, after our Annual General Meeting, was Dr Michael Woodhams, a phylogenist, late of the University of Tasmania, Hobart and one of a number of research workers around the world who were exposed to the power of phylogeny and trained to its subtleties at the Allan Wilson Centre at Massey University.

Phylogeny is the evolutionary history of species, or groups of species, with particular reference to the lines of descent and relationships among broad groups of organisms. A diagram of these relationships is often referred to as an “evolutionary tree”. The root is the shared ancestor and branches and twigs are descendant species exhibiting the genetic differences that led to their separation from neighbouring branches.  … Continue Reading
