California based Print Maker in Residence

November 18, 2016 November 2016 Comments Off on California based Print Maker in Residence

You may have seen artist Mark Johnsen riding around town on the blue Ventana bike these past few weeks, sometimes with Jeffrey the big black dog.  Mark has been the first artist-in-residence at the local Ventana Creative Collective gallery and boutique shop on Kitchener.

Mark’s first New Zealand show Horizons East is inspired by his love of nature and features what seem to be familiar mountainscapes, regardless of the originating hemisphere.  “Big Sky” presents a perfect blue atmosphere fading to the horizon with a bold, beautifully stark mountain claiming the open space.  It feels inviting, yet daunting, as only mountains can be, and so comforting, relaxing and massive all at once.

Several of his large format “rock” monotype prints stem from a charming childhood memory.  To create a sensation in his local neighbourhood, Mark bought shiny polished rocks at a local rock store which he then buried around the yard.  Invited kids would come over and dig up “treasure” everywhere they scratched—quite a delightful backyard event!  You can see the same joy and wonder shining through Mark’s current works of art.  Each rock has a beauty and personality all its own. … Continue Reading

Barrel racing from 4pm

November 18, 2016 November 2016 Comments Off on Barrel racing from 4pm

The Martinborough Business Association is planning to run the Barrel Race again for 2016 to help support Toast Martinborough’s 25th anniversary Weekend. The Race will run on the 19th of November at 4pm at the square.
The Association is only too aware that some of the accidents from last year need to be avoided! There is a completely different track design and style of race proposed to ensure safety for spectators and guests alike.
However help is needed to make this happen. We need volunteer marshals who can help keep the track safe and help with set up and pack down. Also, we are on the hunt for around 100 standard hay bales to borrow for the afternoon. If you can help with anything please email conor@pandk.co.nz by the 5th of November.

Change of name to South Wairarpa Rebus Club

November 18, 2016 November 2016 Comments Off on Change of name to South Wairarpa Rebus Club

The former South Wairarapa Probus Club has celebrated its final occasion as a Probus Club following legal problems caused by Probus South Pacific Limited of Sydney recently trademarking the Probus name and regalia.

Probus in New Zealand had recently completed work to become a stand alone New Zealand organisation but this was challenged by Probus South Pacific Limited who had made a successful application to trademark the Probus name and regalia in the area.

Following a legal challenge the upshot is that no New Zealand clubs can now use the name Probus beyond 31 October 2016 unless they reaffiliate with Probus South Pacific Limited. The initial reason for disaffiliating from Probus South Pacific Limited was that we were required to pay fees to that organisation but were given no voting rights or representation. As part of that legal settlement the people in Auckland running the legal case agreed not to challenge the use of the Probus name in future. … Continue Reading
