The countdown to Christmas has started, apparently there are decorations going up in certain places and my twelve year old has already bought and wrapped all the presents ready for the big day.  I, however, have not done a single thing and it will stay that way until the 1st of December when the children’s Christmas books will come out of hiding.
The Summer Reading Programme planning is underway.  Janet has kindly agreed to run the programme again this year and will be working on that full time from 21st November through until late January.  There will be lots of fun to be had on our pseudo South Sea Island paradise boat which will be temporarily moored on the Village Café garden deck outside (thanks Bruce!).  The theme for this year is Sail into Reading so I have promptly gone and got some palm trees and we will pretend we are on the beautiful island of Tokelau.
Speaking of which, as I write this we are slap bang in the middle of Tokelauan language week (the last week of October) and have a beautiful tropical display up.  We have several Tokelauan people in our population and World Heritage categorise Tokelauan as one of the most endangered indigenous languages in the world.  … Continue Reading

Martinborough Golf Club Champions Found for 2016

November 18, 2016 November 2016, Sports Comments Off on Martinborough Golf Club Champions Found for 2016

golf-club-champions-aCongratulations to all the Martinborough Golf Club Champions for 2016. A number of the matches went the full distance and all were played in very good spirits. It was great to see the largest number of entries in the Women’s divisions in a number of years. Special mention must go to Pip Kirk, who tried to defend her title in the final of the Women’s Silver Championship against multi-time champion Sherry Weatherstone the day before her first baby was due. Baby Hunter didn’t arrive until a week later, but it certainly made for an exciting finals day! … Continue Reading

MADCAPS – Rock Till You Drop –

“Magic – Feels Good”. So goes the by-line for Media Works newest radio station – Magic FM. Launched earlier this year, the Magic FM audience pull has exceeded expectations. Aimed at those in the 50-59 year age group “who have a youthful, active approach to life” it plays an almost continuous programme of rock and pop music from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Steve Lewis, Director of MADCAPS with a similarly themed show, could not fail to please although the audience was probably closer to 80 years at the upper end of the age demographic.
Be that as it may, Rock Till You Drop had several of the audience up on their feet dancing and clapping the night away to music that evoked memories of their youth. Pure nostalgia – felt good. … Continue Reading

From the mayor

November 18, 2016 November 2016 Comments Off on From the mayor

The election campaign is now over and the results finalised. The new South Wairarapa District Council has been sworn in and the hard work begins. The turnout of South Wairarapa voters was at 56.28% which was very good, one of the highest in the country.
As the new Mayor I believe we have one of the most representative councils in New Zealand. We have an equal gender mix, three experienced councillors, six new councillors, a varied age range, rural and urban mix, two Maori and one Samoan councillor.
Our Community Boards are also well represented; the council appointees on the Featherston Community Board are Dayle Harwood and Colin Olds, Martinborough, Pam Colenso and Pip Maynard and Greytown Margaret Craig and Paroa Ammunson. This will ensure we have a wide range of views for debate around the council table. … Continue Reading

New golf clubhouse build, fund-raising up and running

Martinborough golf’s new clubhouse build is well under way _ as are fundraising efforts. It doesn’t seem long since we watched the demolition of the old clubhouse and now the frames for half the new building are in place with scaffolding up ready for the roof timbers. Everything is going …
