Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club

October 19, 2015 October 2015, Sports Comments Off on Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club

Summer is almost here and with it comes a big season for the Martinborough Lawn Tennis Club. Not only do we have the usual Business House, junior programme, senior interclub, midweek ladies and Over The Hill tournament planned, but we also have a major upgrade to the artificial courts on the cards. In collaboration with the Martinborough junior hockey and senior netball clubs, a project is underway to replace the two worn artificial courts, purchase moveable nets and install court lighting. This exciting multi-sport development is dependent on getting the required funding, but is hoped to be completed over the next few months. In the meantime here is what’s coming up and how to get involved:
Junior Tennis – Sign up for junior tennis is 3:30pm Monday 12th Oct down at the tennis club. Coaching will be Monday nights with interclub on Fridays. … Continue Reading

The Pumas

October 19, 2015 October 2015, Sports Comments Off on The Pumas

The-Pumas The Martinborough Puma’s 8th Grade football team had a great start to the season notching up a few wins and draws. As the season progressed a combination of cold weather, sickness and fatigue resulted in a drop in the goal count. Practices were often chaotic but fun was always had by all. The Puma’s and their parents are now looking forward to sleeping in on Saturday mornings!

Verse and Other Pleasures

Verse-and-other-pleasures-1 National Poetry Day was officially held at the end of August, and recognised in Martinborough with ‘Rhyme Time’ at the library, led by John Ansell and Shirley Nightingale. A small but enthusiastic audience enjoyed and interacted, to the extent that one participant raced home to get his trusty guitar and entertained us with a couple of ballads, which are in essence poems set to music (rhyming of course). Between poems we discussed lyrics, music, rhyme, rhythm, and the joy of words in this extraordinary language of ours with its confusions, idiosyncrasies, richness and diversity.
In honour of John, Shirley, poetry, and language, I offer a modest piece of verse, taking on board John’s dictum that “writing poetry without rhyme is like playing tennis with the net down”. … Continue Reading
