Maree’s Musings

DELUSIONS … GRAND or NOT SO MUCH.
Did you know that nine out of ten people hold at least one delusional belief? Really?
A definition -‘something believed despite superior evidence to the contrary’- makes it clear. When our brains can’t explain something, we make stuff up. However, being pretty much clued up is no guarantee of being delusion-free: dig deeper and the idiosyncracies will show up. No use pinning the blame elsewhere either; one is, when push comes to shove, completely responsible. Someone else can’t delude you … it’s all in your corner.

Some delusions are serious and sad – particularly the ‘grand’ ones. They may have exotic-sounding names and be downright creepy. Narcissism, for one. Conspiracy theories … don’t even go there! The Emperor wearing flash new gear became a laughing stock. ‘Delusions of Grandeur’ – how many Napoleons or [Heaven forbid] Donald Trumps are out there?
Luckily there are lots which are more fun and less damaging. We call them superstitions, but they’re still delusional beliefs even if one has a fondness for them. … Continue Reading

Martinborough Junior Hockey Club

September 21, 2016 September 2016, Sports Comments Off on Martinborough Junior Hockey Club

Marty-Magic-Hockey-Team-The hockey season is drawing to a close with 6-aside games completed and only the business end of the 11-aside games left to play. Finals day is 17 September with our club prize-giving and break-up the following week.

Our Marty Magic team made it to the Gold B Grade 6-aside final on 27 August. They played St Pats Shamrocks and very narrowly lost 2-1 after leading 1-0 at halftime. The team played really well, passing nicely and with some great tackling in defence.

Their best game of the season was a 2-0 win over Kahutara in the semi-final the week before. It was a solid team effort and everyone performed to the best of their abilities. With five out of the nine players new to hockey this year, the team has come a long way in one season. Their enthusiasm for the game has always been great, and now with some skills and a years’ experience they will be ready for 11 aside next year! Well done to all of the players in the team and to their coach, Graeme Scarr. … Continue Reading

Martinborough junior soccer

September 21, 2016 September 2016, Sports Comments Off on Martinborough junior soccer

Junior-soccer With a record nine Martinborough teams entered in this year’s Capital Football Wairarapa Junior competition, it’s been a busy and fun year for our young footballers.

Apart from a couple of weather-related cancellations, we’ve had a fantastic season of football and all our players (and coaches) have learned a lot! We would like to thank all of our team coaches and managers for dedicating so much time and energy to their teams, without this help, the club could not continue. Our prizegiving will be held on Sunday September 18th at 3pm, with photos, awards and a shared afternoon tea.

Planning for our next season is already underway, and we are hoping to further develop the club with the introduction of a senior mens’ team. Paul Brandon will be taking over the running of the club and we are all very excited to see this new momentum kick in and the club keep growing. Paul has great football contacts locally and over the hill so look out for further football development opportunities over the summer off-season!

Martinborough Ladies Hockey Club News

September 21, 2016 September 2016, Sports Comments Off on Martinborough Ladies Hockey Club News

Martinborough-Ladies-HockeyThe Martinborough Ladies Hockey Club has had another great season. After completing a round of grading games early in the season, the team was unfortunate to just miss out on being promoted to the Women’s 2 grade, losing a promotion/relegation game in extra time against St Matthews 2nd X1. The team did well however to make it to the Women’s 3 grade final for the second year in a row.

Unfortunately Martinborough were unable to defend the trophy that we won last year. Playing Wairarapa College 2nd XI in the final was a good challenge, with the final score 2-1 to the college girls. Martinborough’s only goal in the final was pretty spectacular, scored by Heather Butler, who had the added pressure of playing against both of her daughters! … Continue Reading
