Viv NapierVIV NAPIER’s GOALS
The huge advantage of 12 years Council experience enables me to hit the ground running, familiar with both the issues and equally importantly the nuances. So unlike the other candidates, I don’t have to set an immediate goal simply to become acquainted with the issues and the people.

Local Government is not like Parliament, so my goals are pitched at a local level and benefit voters by being realistic and attainable.

Waihenga or Waihinga?

September 21, 2016 September 2016 Comments Off on Waihenga or Waihinga?

The spelling of this place-name has caused endless confusion over the years. Even the Martinborough Star has difficulty deciding which might be the correct spelling. The July issue this year has the name spelled Waihenga twice on page 1, and Waihinga five times on page 7.
My research on the matter indicates that although Waihinga appears on the earliest maps, the Waihenga spelling became more common from the 1870s onwards, often appearing thus in Wellington newspapers.

For example, the old cemetery next to the school in Martinborough is signposted as Waihenga Cemetery. The earliest burial in this cemetery dates to 1872. Crawford uses this spelling in his interesting article about Bidwill’s hills in 1880 (Crawford, J.C. 1880. On Bidwill’s Front Hills. Article LXVIII, Transactions and Proceedings of the New Zealand Institute Volume 12: 416-418, 1879). The bridge over the Ruamahanga is frequently referred to as Waihenga Bridge in various official local body documents. For example, the 1884 survey plan 2242 of roadways in the vicinity of Martinborough uses the Waihenga spelling. … Continue Reading

Wellington Free Ambulance Onesie Day Appeal 9 – 11 September 2016

September 21, 2016 September 2016 Comments Off on Wellington Free Ambulance Onesie Day Appeal 9 – 11 September 2016

Wellington Free Ambulance is the one and only paramedic service in the Wairarapa, and the only ones in the country who are free!
Each year we have to fundraise to keep our service free and here for you.
9 September is our Onesie Day appeal, and we really need your help.

Last year Wairarapa people donated a super generous $21,500 over the Onesie Day weekend.
That’s helped us buy new lifesaving equipment and get our Wairarapa based paramedics to literally thousands of emergencies in your community, including our Martinborough team who operate from one of our stations next to the Fire Station on Texas Street.
Your help means that we can be here for you.

Wellington Free collectors will be in Martinborough around Pain & Kershaw and Mitre 10 for the Onesie Day weekend.
Come down and meet some of the team and have a look through one of our ambulances.
On the Sunday we will also have a BBQ thanks to Mitre 10 Martinborough.
If you can’t make it, you can still help. Please donate at wfa.org.nz/donate
