Many of you will be eyeing the last of the tomato crop , still green and unlikely to ripen. Here is a very simple to prepare, but delicious, green tomato chutney recipe.

Ingredients
2 tablespoons mixed spice
1.3kg green (unripe) tomatoes, chopped
2 medium brown onions, chopped
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, chopped
560mls (2 1/4 cups) malt vinegar
220g (1 cup) brown sugar
2 teaspoons salt, to taste

Method
Tie the mixed spice in a small piece of muslin to enclose. Combine spice bag, green tomatoes, onions, apples, malt vinegar, brown sugar and salt in a large heavy-based saucepan and bring to the boil.
?Simmer, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally, or until the chutney is thickened and only a small amount of liquid is left.

Remove the spice bag and spoon the hot chutney into hot sterilised jars.
Seal immediately and invert the jars for 2 minutes. Stand jars upright and cool to room temperature.

From the Mayor

The end of February officially marks the close of summer.  Looking back it has been a true Wairarapa season, hot and dry.  From a lifestyle point of view it was wonderful with day after day of blue sky but farmers without irrigation are now feeling the pinch.  By now probably everybody except the orchardists would welcome a good few days of gentle rain.  Certainly from a Council point of view it can’t come soon enough. … Continue Reading

Hi from Martinborough Plunket

March 13, 2015 March 2015 Comments Off on Hi from Martinborough Plunket

We were very busy during the last Martinborough Fair Day just outside the roller doors of P and K’s on our ‘Ker Plunket’ stall. Our new line of baby Onesies and Tees have been a huge hit!  We are running out of some sizes, so be quick if you want to purchase any (Lia 3069798) – and we’ll be at the March Fair Day.  Speaking of Fair Day, it was great to see so many parents use the Mother’s Room set up at the town hall, catching ten minutes rest while changing baby, having a cuppa or just spending time out from the sun! … Continue Reading
