Martinborough-Proam-golfOn Tuesday 3 February, 37 teams of three amateur golfers each played with a professional in the hotly contested Spark Business Pro-Am at Martinborough Golf Club.

The victorious professional was Rotorua-based Frenchman, Victor Janin who had to battle Taupo’s Troy Ropiha in an exciting two hole play-off, surrounded by spectators’ on the Par 3 8th hole. The first time down the play-off hole saw both players score par, but a bogey from Ropiha the second time around gave the victory to Janin. Mountain bikers with a sense of fun, adventure and love of rural landscapes will be catered for this April when the Martinborough Lions host the annual Skyline Challenge.

The event, on Sunday 26th April, will be held on the historic Huangarua, Puruatanga and Oystershell Farms all of which are on the outskirts of the boutique wine village of Martinborough in the South Wairarapa. Mountain bikers will have the choice of completing three courses on private farmland, offering different types of terrain.

They include a 32km grade 3 ride for those looking for a serious mountainbike challenge ($50 entry fee); a demanding and quite hilly 16km ride for an intermediate level rider ($35 entry fee) and a fun 8km ride designed to get families out and about enjoying the ANZAC Day weekend. The budget for building the present Town Hall, in 1912, was some 3,500 pounds. With only 700 people in the area and an average income of 3 pounds a week this was a huge achievement.

To attract the necessary institutional funding for our 21st century project we need to show the same sort of community commitment. So far generous private donors have pledged over $1m but more is still needed.

We are now launching a new round of fundraising for pledges of $5000, $3000 or $1500. To show our appreciation in a tangible way to those who become supporters we will be permanently engraving their names within the grounds of the new centre. … Continue Reading
