COMMUNITY BOARD NEWS

Being the newest member on the Martinborough Community Board, I was given the opportunity to write for this issue of our ‘Martinborough Star’ about the Board’s structure and activities from a ‘newbie’s’ perspective.

For those that don’t know me, I’m now a long-term resident of our town and still as much enamoured of it as when I discovered it in 1974. Martinborough is small enough to allow individuals to influence how it functions and for any one of them to be able to suggest exciting improvements. I have plenty of ideas on both aspects, but more importantly, am delighted when other locals, who I hope always consider I’m approachable, let me know theirs! These three factors were the deciding ones for me to ‘put my name forward’. … Continue Reading

Book review Rubbernecker

March 15, 2017 March 2017, Regular Features Comments Off on Book review Rubbernecker

book_review_use_this_oneIf you are craving something different in the line of reading this may just what you are looking for. Rubbernecker is a very unusual book. The main character has Asperger syndrome. It is mainly set in a hospital where he is studying to become a pathologist, for which his excessive nature makes him very suitable.

After reading the first couple of chapters I nearly gave up on this book which seemed to be aimless, fortunately I decided to press on for one more chapter for it suddenly found direction. It would be spoiling the book to even hint on the story line. Suffice to say that there are two unrelated mysteries and the characters are almost all fellow students and their tutors. … Continue Reading

Regional Council notes

Summer has been and gone and one could be forgiven for feeling that is has been a bit of a fizzer weather wise. The cooler, blustery conditions may have been appreciated by those growing grass but this unusual summer has certainly wreaked havoc on many events.

Wairarapa is supposed to be synonymous with long hot, dry summers but is it really like that? We humans have fairly short memories and it is easy to be fooled into thinking that this summer is an anomaly, maybe even caused by climate change.
A check back of old records however throws up any number of unseasonal summer conditions or weather events as they are now referred to. … Continue Reading

MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

March 15, 2017 March 2017, Regular Features, Sports Comments Off on MARTINBOROUGH GOLF REPORT

It was close but Rookie Justin Morris wasn’t too fazed with not breaking or equalling the course record held by Lance Phelps after securing his first win as a Professional at the the 2017 Invitational Spark Pro Am at Martinborough recently. The field of 43 PGA professionals were highly complimentary of the course and the progress in upgrading our greens though a number did stumbled with our Par 3’s with very few managing to birdie them.

Morris, teeing off first thing took full advantage of the calm conditions scoring 10 birdies, paring  the 4 Par 3’s, the only blip came on his last hole when he bogeyed the 18th. to record his Gross 63. This score was three shots clear of the three way tie in second place to Wesley Jeon who eagled Numbers 1 and 2, though bogeyed the par 3’s 12 and 16. … Continue Reading

Golf pro-am success _ without clubhouse

By Karen Stephens A record field of 172 players, including 43 professionals from New Zealand and Australia, battled light winds, warm temperatures and even light early-morning fog at Martinborough golf’s 2024 CER Electrical and Holmes Construction pro-am on February 1. At least that was the range of excuses for some …
