Tuturumuri A&P Show

October 14, 2013 October 2013 Comments Off on Tuturumuri A&P Show

No, it’s not a misprint. Tuturumuri School and community are putting on their own A&P Show. The lambs and calves reared by the local children will be a feature but it is stressed that this is not like a school pet day of years gone by but rather a real rural community day.

There will be wood chopping, quad and trailer backing and roping competitions. Plenty of bargains too with white elephant and household goods stalls along with a decorated cake auction, sausage sizzle and other attractions. Free tea and coffee will be available throughout the show.

This is a great opportunity to see a vibrant rural community in action – and a chance to join in and enjoy the fun.

So, mark your calendar Friday 25th Oct from 9am to 1.30.

Yemen Comes to South Wairarapa

October 14, 2013 October 2013 Comments Off on Yemen Comes to South Wairarapa

At the August meeting of the South Wairarapa Probus Club local resident Dr Paul Harris gave us an illustrated talk on the little known country of Yemen.

What a fascinating story he told! Paul Harris, a past member of the NZ Electoral Commission had spent time in San’a, the capital, assisting the Yemen Government to develop electoral systems that would bring that country into the modern world as far as national elections were concerned.

Yemen , Paul showed us, lies to the south of Saudi Arabia and the west of Oman. It has a population of 25 million, mainly Arab, almost totally Moslem, and 70% living in the rural areas. The country is largely desert and mountains with fertile regions along the coasts of the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean . Its location is strategically important as it borders the Red Sea which carries 10% of the world’s oil trade to the Suez Canal. … Continue Reading

The Martinborough Town Hall – Earthquake-prone Building

October 14, 2013 October 2013 Comments Off on The Martinborough Town Hall – Earthquake-prone Building

As many locals may have noticed, the Martinborough Town Hall is displaying a ‘yellow sticker’. South Wairarapa District Council would like to provide information around its Earthquake-prone Building policy and what the stickering means.

The Building Act 2004 requires territorial authorities to develop their own earthquake-prone building policy and to assess the buildings within their territory against this policy.  Martinborough Town Hall has been determined to be an earthquake-prone building within the meaning of the Act. … Continue Reading

South Wairarapa Rotary Club

October 14, 2013 October 2013 Comments Off on South Wairarapa Rotary Club

South Wairarapa Rotarians have been busy this month!  Members were part of a team of around 20 hearty souls that arrived at Alistair Sutherland’s Whangaimoana property to help him pick around 10,000 daffodils, which he and Jacqui donate to the Cancer Society every year for Daffodil Day (for “a goodly amount”, according to Alastair!).  Club members also turned out to help Jim Law and other “Ducks Unlimited” supporters to plant 1,500 native flaxes at Wairio wetlands at the annual working bee to restore the South Wairarapa wetlands.  And members from all 6 Wairarapa Rotary clubs recently came together to watch “Song for Marion”, a fund-raiser for Life Flight Trust, resulting in a donation of $1,000 to them. … Continue Reading
