In 2008, the Wellington Youth Orchestra performed in the Martinborough Town Hall to assist with raising funds for the construction of the Martinborough Medical Centre. The audience was captivated by Aziel Verner, the diminutive violinist who played in the second violins; he was 11 at the time.
Aziel is returning to Martinborough for another fundraising concert, this time as a soloist to assist with raising funds for The Dame Malvina Major Foundation. He has been a guest artist and won several awards since his Wellington Youth Orchestra days including a scholarship to the inaugural Verbier Festival Music Camp in the Swiss Alps where he also performed with the Verbier Chamber Orchestra.

The Dame Malvina Major Foundation was set up by Dame Malvina Major in 1991 to “enable young performers of talent to reach their potential”. Funding is provided via the Foundation for emerging artists from the Performing Arts. … Continue Reading

Wine-Auction-piece
With less than a month to go before Hospice Wairarapa’s charity wine auction and fiesta of flavour kicks off on October 19, organising is in full swing and it promises to be a night for the senses. The aromas of a riotous combination of food featuring a range of world cuisines will draw guests to the table and then back for more. Tasting exquisite fare enhanced by Wairarapa wines can only result in repeated return visits to sample yet more. … Continue Reading

Meet-John-Ansell
If you read last month’s Martinborough Star you will probably have had a smile and a chuckle over the first of John Ansell’s poems. John promises one each month for the foreseeable future, so he undoubtedly qualifies as Martinborough’s poet in residence. His work also currently features on the front windows of Kitchener’s Dairy and the library, so do enjoy them as you pass by.

John came over the hill early in the year, and it’s his first encounter with life in a country town, although he was “sentenced to Rathkeale for three years in the mid 70s”. The slower pace of life but with “all the mod cons,” including the hot chocolate at Kitchener’s which he describes as “the quality of Wellington’s best and twice the quantity,” is proving very agreeable. … Continue Reading
