The new Rotary year has just started, and committees are already busy on finding ways to put funds raised from the Rotary Martinborough Fair back into the South Wairarapa community. Well, it’s not all fund-raising and meetings at South Wairarapa Rotary; we also get together and help out on fun projects such as pest control at Greytown’s Tait’s Reserve (apparently, birds are starting to return to the reserve, so the trapping is obviously effective!), and planting native flaxes at the Whangaimoana sand dunes. 

On August 3rd, some of our members went on the yearly visit to the dunes to help Past President Alastair Sutherland (who was coordinating this annual restoration project), local residents and Greater Wellington Regional Council.  1,500 flaxes were planted, which was an outstanding effort, and a fair few sausages consumed at the barbeque held after the work was done. … Continue Reading

Soldier’s Memorial Park

Soldier’s Memorial Park is the greased area of Martin Square which the original buildings: Evans, Pains, WFCA, the Post office and pubs all addressed. In 1899 the son of the Town founder, also John Martin, gave twenty five pound to have the park fenced off in four sections and the roads which ran through it paved. The sections were planted in pine, native and a few English trees.

In 1905 Waihenga and Martinborough were combined and a Town Board formed. At the time town dignitaries planted four trees – but set no plaque to mark the occasion. … Continue Reading

It is wonderful to be involved with a club where members step up to the mark and I salute you. Chris Cole, Malcolm Wood, Mike Hatrick, Doug Ferguson, John Slater, Ali Holmes and Ro Griffiths to name just a few have been volunteering their time to assist Scott in keeping the course at its absolute best.
 
The Grumpy’s are without doubt the happiest when a jug is won although lately this has not been the case and Rick Hargreaves has won the comp for the last two weeks in a row. … Continue Reading
