Baby Shawl Raffle Benefits Children of Nepal

August 11, 2015 August 2015 Comments Off on Baby Shawl Raffle Benefits Children of Nepal

The beautiful white woollen baby shawl that was raffled recently has been won by Daphne Geisler of Martinborough.

The shawl was hand crocheted by Margaret Norrish and was a masterpiece of fine handiwork. Over $250 was raised and this has been passed to local resident, Rose Falconer, who works as a volunteer for six months each year with disabled children in Kathmandu, Nepal. Rose says that this amount of money will go a long way in Nepal towards covering the costs of caring for these needy children at the DHC New Life Centre. Rose returns to Nepal early in August.

Barbara Cox, who organised the raffle, says “ A big thank you to all those who bought tickets. Your money will be much appreciated by those who care for these children in Nepal, especially as they cope with the after-math of their recent earthquakes.”

Book-reviewMathew’s tale

Author Quinton Jardine is best known for his mystery crime novels – which are recognised as being considerably better than the run of the mill. Quinton has moved onto novels of which ‘Mathew’s tale’ is his second to be published.

Set in Lanarkshire 1818, Mathew Flemming arrives home after serving for seven years in the Napoleonic wars, only to find that everything had changed since he left. It was not only the village which had changed , Mathew too has changed, himself had been seriously wounded in the war. What follows is an ingenious tale covering two families over the following fifteen years. A tale of perseverance in tragedy and retribution for serious wrongs. However this is not all doleful, there is plenty of love and joy along the way as well. … Continue Reading

A nice drop

August 11, 2015 August 2015 Comments Off on A nice drop

The New Zealand Herald’s wine writer recently described a Kerpen Riesling Kabinett Mosel- Ruwer as; ‘honeyed, toasty and minerally. It has developed mature riesling’s kerosene character and is driven tension between its gentle sweetness and vibrant grapefruit acidity’.

Not to be outdone a second writer described the vintage as; ‘perfect summer dinking with a long, long lingering seduction. It is moderately fleshy with a delicate tangy backbone.
Wine reviews are littered with words such as elegant structure, Marmitey, excellent length, taste mosaic of violets and dried herbs, black cherries, artichoke, citrus aromas, grassy, easy flowing, long palate etc.

It leads one to think that maybe the reviewers have been suffering from over-enthusiasm, or an over dose of the blessed beverage. Or as Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying away back in 1755; ‘ When the wine enters out goes the truth.’
