The New Zealand Herald’s wine writer recently described a Kerpen Riesling Kabinett Mosel- Ruwer as; ‘honeyed, toasty and minerally. It has developed mature riesling’s kerosene character and is driven tension between its gentle sweetness and vibrant grapefruit acidity’.
Not to be outdone a second writer described the vintage as; ‘perfect summer dinking with a long, long lingering seduction. It is moderately fleshy with a delicate tangy backbone.
Wine reviews are littered with words such as elegant structure, Marmitey, excellent length, taste mosaic of violets and dried herbs, black cherries, artichoke, citrus aromas, grassy, easy flowing, long palate etc.
It leads one to think that maybe the reviewers have been suffering from over-enthusiasm, or an over dose of the blessed beverage. Or as Benjamin Franklin is quoted as saying away back in 1755; ‘ When the wine enters out goes the truth.’
