On Friday the 10th June we had an Italian themed evening, which latterly became known as The Italian Job, it was a while since we had done anything like this, perhaps 20 years! However, it all seemed to come together. We started the evening with a couple of plates of bruschetta, an interesting prosecco and six new guests.

Philippa provided the prosecco ‘’Riondo Collezione Millesimato Prosecco 19”. Prosecco can only come from the North East Italian wine regions of Veneto and Friuli. This was a tasty, bright, zingy wine that finished on a crisp note, it tastes dry, although it has residual sugar of 14 gms and was enjoyed by all. … Continue Reading

Maree’s musings

GO TO YOUR ROOM

Recently, I happened to come across the word crawlspace. I’ve heard it before, but as usual, it started me thinking. For one thing, the word itself is squashed up like the area it signifies, sounds uncomfortable and probably is. I thought it defined the ‘room’ in the ceiling which you access via the manhole (definitely a boy’s thing), but in fact it’s the underhouse. These are found in houses built on the flat; otherwise it’s a basement, with room to move, store things, and even live in, at a pinch.

As a small girl, investigating our underhouse was scary .. dark and musty, with cobwebs and a dirt floor, but discovering an old wind-up gramophone complete with trumpet made it worthwhile. HMV ones like this were produced in the 1900s, and so called because of their trademark terrier, listening intently to ‘His Master’s Voice’ on the record. … Continue Reading

Martinborough Golf Report

July 6, 2022 July 2022 Comments Off on Martinborough Golf Report

It has turned very wintery out on the course over the last couple of weeks which is very unfortunate for those that need a cart and judging by how wet it is underfoot it could be a few weeks before it will be dry enough for them to go out again.

Last month Thursday Club held a tournament to farewell Doug and Jan Ferguson who were moving north to be nearer family.  There was a great turnout of nearly 80 players with Jason Shaw the winner with 42 points which is very impressive off a handicap of 4.  Other Thursday Club winners over the last month have been Jason Shaw, Rob Smith and Rob Lopez.

A vast number have had twos, namely Alison Tipler, Debbie Donaldson, Sandy Bidwill (2), Darren Bevan, Nicola Warren, Malcolm Bridge (2), Martin Napier (2), Jason Shaw (2), Shane Hislop, Nick Morison, Andy Morison, Rob Lopez (2), Kane Sim, Bob Lindberg, Glenn Harper, Richard Thompson, Sandra Petersen, Guy Walmsley, Chris Ranish, Pete Griffiths, Doug Clark, Alistair Petrie and Bill Jago. … Continue Reading

Martinborough Lions

Our month of June has been a busy time with some members away with Covid, which is still hanging around in our District. Our meeting on the 8th June had 21 members and 2 Guests attended.

This was a meeting of surprises; it was a pleasure to call upon our oldest member Ray Lind, with the cutting of his 94th Birthday Cake. Ray has been a member of Martinborough Lions for over 56 Years, and still a very active member in the club, always willing to help out where he can. Congratulations Ray.

It was a great Honour for me to call upon Ray, our Life member, to unveil the new Life Members Board for the Club,. Also a pleasure to nominate Terry Blacktop to have his name added to the Board as a Life Member for his many years of service to the Club, as Treasurer. Congratulations Terry. … Continue Reading
